Hiroshima city is a beautifull city with lots to explore. It is big, but still small enough to easily get around and know the city. It has so many things to explore. Miyajiima is very close there and has a lot to see. The city has a lot of history and the Peace Museum as well as the A-Bomb Dome and the peace monument teach a lot about its past. Hiroshima is a great place to visit from other cities and has very beautiful mountains surrounding the city.
At Hiroshima City University, I studied Urushi (Japanese lacquer art) as well as Textile design. I love about the lectures, that I was able to learn the traditional art step by step. As my Urushi class was quite small, I got a lot of help from my teachers. The university had a lot of Urushi artists visiting the classes to show and explain their work. Also, we did some workshops where we could learn more about Urushi.
I had a great stay in Hiroshima and I would recommend it to anybody. The university holds many possibilities to study traditional Japanese art and the experience of living in Japan is something that has taught me a lot. I recommend studying Japanese beforehand as most teachers and students in the art faculty do not speak English and it can be quite confusing if you do not have any Japanese skills. You can also learn very quick while you are here, but it is nice to know some basic Japanese in advance.
