Description:
One of major reasons for poverty in developing countries is lack of access
to natural resources for people's livelihood. Environmental degradation
of natural resources is caused by poverty, and poverty is caused by natural
resource degradation. Therefore, economic development is necessary both
for poverty alleviation and environmental/natural resource recovery. After
explaining these relationships among poverty, environment and development
with specific details, the lecture will focus on how to promote people's
access to water for agriculture, as water is becoming a scarce resource
in the world. National reforms of water institutions are on-going in developing
countries and they are introduced to students as examples of development
activities, together with related economic and social issues.
Objective:
The lecture aims at 1) recognizing relationships among poverty, environment,
development, and peace, 2) understanding the importance of people's livelihood
for poverty alleviation, 3) introducing actual development activities in
water management, and 4) gaining knowledge of natural resource governance
through people's participation.
